Capturing Sarah and Niels’ San Luis Obispo Courthouse wedding felt like hanging out with old friends. They are both thoughtful, sweet souls. Sarah and Niels are very grounded individuals. But they also like to joke around and get silly (which you’ll get to see more of, below!). Their courthouse wedding in San Luis Obispo was a fun afternoon. One that blended their vows with running through the streets like a couple of crazy kids in love.
Before we headed to the courthouse for their ceremony, I met Sarah and Niels at the Fremont Theater. The idea was to stroll around downtown SLO with a few scheduled fun stops along the way. Lining the streets of downtown San Luis Obispo were brand-new, brightly colored murals. These works of art add to the vibrancy of the foot traffic in the city. They also proved to be perfect backdrops for wedding photos of two people deeply in love and on their way to the courthouse to tie the knot.
We also made a detour into a local record shop, BooBoo Records, a personal local favorite of mine. Here, Sarah and Niels browsed through the vinyl in their full wedding day attire. They laughed and had fun as if it were any other afternoon spent in each other’s company. Sarah & Niels are both big music fans. Making the trip to the record store a fun experience & an amazing way to kick off their intentional San Luis Obispo courthouse wedding.

As we slowly made our way to the courthouse, we were accompanied by Sarah and Niels’ immediate family members. Everyone who came was overjoyed to be celebrating the love that Sarah and Niels share. Luckily for me, as their wedding photographer, it also turned out that their families were up for a fun photography experience. There was a moment when everyone completely took over the courthouse elevator, respectfully, of course. They filled it with smiles and cheer, creating one of the most amazing wedding day memories for Sarah and Niels. As it just so happens, Sarah had previous experience working at the courthouse. Added to that, the judge who married her and Niels was also a family friend. Which gave their intimate wedding ceremony yet another layer of individualism.

Once they tied the knot, the entire group went outside for family photos. There was one additional fun-filled, unique twist that just so happened to be waiting outside for Sarah and Niels after they tied the knot. Their vintage truck was parked in front of the courthouse. It was fully decked out with cans strung to the back, tulle bows anywhere and everywhere, and a just-married sign displayed on the roof. To kick up the fun a few notches, Niels’ sister gave the newlyweds some hysterical novelty teeth to wear for photos! They were such good sports about diving right into the fun and making the most of their wedding day with photos in front of the courthouse.
Eventually, the entire group was off to Novo Restaurant. Everyone arrived ready to celebrate Sarah and Niels’ wedding day over delectable bites and a toast in their honor. It was such a fun journey getting Sarah and Niels to the San Luis Obispo courthouse for their wedding, with loving family members who matched their vibe. You can see some of my favorite details from their wedding day through the photos below.
